Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States. In 2022, 49,476 Americans died from suicide, and there were 1.6 million suicide attempts. Yet 94% of Americans see suicide as preventable, offering hope that increased education can lead to a decline in these alarming numbers.

“Talk Saves Lives”, recorded on Wednesday, December 2024 featured expert insights from Halli Drake, MPA, CNP, Tennessee area director of AFSP. This webinar focused on:
- The Scope of the Problem: The latest data on suicide in the United States
- Research: What causes people to consider suicide, how certain communities are impacted and contributors to suicide risk
- Prevention: Factors that lower suicide risk, plus strategies for managing mental health and being proactive about self-care
- What You Can Do: How to recognize warning signs and start a conversation with someone you are concerned about and ways to seek crisis resources for yourself or others
About the Speaker
Halli Drake, MPA, CNP, is Tennessee area director at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education and advocacy. She is also co-chair for the foundation’s Memphis Walk and Communication Committee, a member of the LGBTQ+ Committee and a State Capitol Day public policy advocate. She earned a master’s of public administration degree from the University of Colorado Denver, specializing in nonprofit management.
