UnitedHealthcare and VHAN Launch Health Care Quality & Value Initiative

UnitedHealthcare has launched an accountable care program with the clinicians of the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network to improve quality, lower costs and enhance the coordination of care for nearly 35,000 people across Tennessee enrolled in UnitedHealthcare’s employer and individual health plans. This new accountable care relationship enables the network to care for patients using an innovative value-based model focused on keeping people healthy.

UnitedHealthcare shares clear, actionable information about patients’ unique health needs with the network’s clinicians to enable high-value care. Sharing this information improves the coordination of care and takes the burden off patients to aggregate information from their doctor visits and tests. This helps reduce duplicative tests and costs, and promotes a team-based approach to patient care.

Accountable care programs also improve the ability to identify patients at high risk for major health issues, helping them manage chronic health conditions and take necessary medications to reduce emergency room visits and hospital readmissions.

More than 15 million people enrolled in UnitedHealthcare plans across the country have access to accountable care programs, delivered in part through more than 800 accountable care arrangements nationwide as the organization engages in deeper, more collaborative relationships with physicians and hospitals.

Clinicians nationwide are showing strong interest in a shift to value-based care. UnitedHealthcare’s total payments to physicians and hospitals that are tied to value-based arrangements have tripled in the last three years to more than $64 billion. By the end of 2018, UnitedHealthcare expects that figure to reach $75 billion.
