Recognizing PCMH Practices in VHAN
The patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model is designed to put patients at the forefront of care through practice organization, care coordination, quality improvement and other overarching themes. Research from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) shows that PCMHs improve quality and the patient experience, and increase staff satisfaction—all while reducing healthcare costs. Practices that earn NCQA’s PCMH recognition have made a commitment to continuous quality improvement and a patient-centered approach to care.
Vickie Smith, Chief Executive Officer at Children’s Clinic East, and her team have worked hard to earn their practice’s PCMH recognition. While Smith acknowledges that the certification process was lengthy and difficult at times, she also believes it has helped her team align on the best processes to follow for quality performance.
“The PCMH certification process makes you assess if you’re doing what you said you were doing. When you have to prove your actions, you realize that sometimes you’re missing important steps,” Smith says. “Overall, it makes you a better organization. It makes you pay close attention to quality and to processes, and it holds you accountable to doing things the right way.”
